The Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world — 10,582 km² of blinding white desert at 3,656 m of altitude, and one of the most photographed landscapes on Earth. Reaching it requires planning: there are no international flights directly to Uyuni, and the salar sits in a remote corner of southwest Bolivia. This guide covers every realistic route in 2026.

Option 1: Fly from La Paz (El Alto, LPB) to Uyuni (UYU)

This is the fastest and most popular route. Boliviana de Aviación (BoA) and Amaszonas operate daily flights of about 1 hour. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in high season (May–October). Arrive at LPB 90 minutes before departure; the airport sits at 4,061 m and many travelers feel mild altitude symptoms — sip coca tea and move slowly.

Option 2: Fly from Santa Cruz (Viru Viru, VVI) with a connection in La Paz

Travelers arriving from São Paulo, Panama or Madrid usually land at VVI. Connect via La Paz to Uyuni — total travel time 5–7 hours including layover. Allow at least 90 minutes of connection time in LPB. A private transfer at VVI avoids stress between flights when you fly out the same day.

Option 3: Overland from La Paz or Sucre

Tourist buses (Todo Turismo, Trans Omar) run overnight from La Paz to Uyuni (~10 hours). From Sucre the journey takes ~8 hours. Comfortable for backpackers, less suitable for executive travelers. Private 4x4 transfers with overnight in Potosí are also available.

Option 4: Multi-day 4x4 tour from Tupiza or San Pedro de Atacama (Chile)

If you are crossing from northern Chile, the 3-day 4x4 tour starting in San Pedro de Atacama enters Bolivia through the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve (Laguna Verde, Laguna Colorada) and ends on the salar — one of the great overland journeys in South America.

Best season to visit

  • December – March (wet season): shallow water creates the famous mirror effect, but some areas of the salar may be inaccessible.
  • May – October (dry season): vast white hexagons, full access to Isla Incahuasi and the southern lagoons, very cold nights (-15°C).
  • April and November: shoulder months with mixed conditions and fewer tourists.

What to pack

Sunscreen SPF 50+, polarized sunglasses, lip balm, thermal layers, gloves, hat, sturdy waterproof shoes, refillable water bottle, snacks, altitude medication, and cash in bolivianos — ATMs in Uyuni are unreliable.

Sample 4-day itinerary from Santa Cruz

Day 1: VVI → LPB → UYU (afternoon arrival, rest). Day 2: salar tour — Colchani salt hotel, Isla Incahuasi, sunset on the flats. Day 3: southern lagoons — Laguna Colorada, Sol de Mañana geysers. Day 4: return UYU → LPB → VVI.
