The El Alto International Airport (LPB) sits at 4,061 meters above sea level — the highest international commercial airport in the world. Arriving in La Paz from sea level can be physically demanding, and the descent from El Alto down into the canyon of La Paz drops 500 meters in just 15 minutes. - Centro / Sopocachi: 30–40 minutes via the Autopista La Paz – El Alto.

- Obrajes / Miraflores: 35–45 minutes.
Traffic on the autopista is heavy 07:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:30 — add 20 minutes.

Altitude tips for arriving travelers
On day 1 in La Paz: avoid alcohol, eat light, drink coca tea, and rest. Do not plan demanding activities for the first 24 hours. If you have a heart condition, talk to your doctor about acetazolamide before traveling. Hotels in Zona Sur (3,200 m) are easier on the body than those in the centre (3,650 m).
